GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a prestigious all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the Government of India.  GATE primarily tests the technical knowledge of students in various undergraduate subjects of engineering.


Admissions to postgraduate programmes with government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/institutes/universities is open to those who qualify through this test. A stipend of Rs 12,400/- is given to the GATE qualifiers by MHRD, GOI for pursuing Master's programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture, and Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science in Institutes supported by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) or other Government agencies. Apart from admissions to M.Tech/ME/MS courses, GATE is also the qualifying test for many PSUs like BHEL, NTPC, IOCL etc.

With barely a week remaining for the first set of test takers for for the actual (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering) GATE exam, all the aspiring students must be worried about what to do at this point of time. It's natural to get stressed about the final exam but stress will not lead you anywhere. Listed below are a few tips and tricks that a candidate should remember and follow

Before the exam

  1. Avoid starting new topics, it's not the time to start new topics so avoid any such activity and focus only on your strengths.
  2. Solve as many previous year gate question papers as far as possible during this period
  3. Make your own exam strategy based on your experience in Mock tests
  4. Revise only important formulae now
  5. Always be confident and don't lose hope.
  6. Don't panic about the competition and the exam, keep calm, this will help you focus on your preparation.
  7. Check  your schedule and visit your allotted center to avoid searching for the venue on the test day
  8. Avoid overnight preparations especially the night before your gate exam.
  9. Solving some aptitude Questions the day before can help save time during GATE exam
  10. One day before GATE, stop thinking about it. Read your favorite comic book or just sleep a few hours, anything that relaxes you. Appear for the exam with a fresh mind.

On the Test Day

  1. Go to the test centre as early as possible
  2. Carry your stationery & admit card along with one valid photo identification proof.
  3. Don't skip breakfast/lunch based on your session timings to keep you full on energy for the exam
  4. Go through all the instructions given before starting the exam.
  5. Meditate if possible before starting the exam.
  6. Have a quick look at all the questions given in the question paper.
  7. Start the part which you are comfortable (quantitative/technical).
  8. Don't waste too much time in a single question even though it may be from a well known topic. In case of multiple choice questions, attend only known questions.
  9. The penalty for a wrong answer (for the multiple choice questions) is a severe 33 per cent and hence the candidates should answer the questions carefully to maximize their marks.
  10. Don't get distracted with things happening around.
  11. Time management is must.
  12. Remember that GATE is not the end of the world: Put your best foot forward and do not worry excessively about the results
