An airhostess (woman) and steward (man) are hosts on an airplane who hospitably look after the passengers in flight and tend to their comfort and requirements.

How to get into it?

Step 1: class XII stream science, commerce or arts/humanitarian

Step 2: graduation in hotel management or home science or any graduation

Step 3: selection and training from airlines/ airhostess training academy

Step 4: become an air hostess

Employment opportunities: with airlines as cabin crew and at airports as ground staff.

National and some international airlines recruit cabin crew by calling for applications through leading newspapers - Graduates in the age group of 19-25 years for training. International Airlines recruit airhostesses in the age group of 18-35 years.

Basic requirements:

  1. Good language, ability and proficiency in English, Hindi, a regional language and at least one foreign language are essential requirements for inflight crew members working for National or International carriers.
  2. Physical requirements - Height for Air Hostesses - minimum of 157.5 cm and Flight Pursers 163 cm with proportionate weight.
  3. Normal eyesight without glasses or a minimum uncorrected distant vision of 6/40 is acceptable.

Selection procedure

National Carriers - Scrutinise applications and conduct written test comprising of general knowledge, mental ability and verbal ability for shortlisted candidates. This is followed by an interview and group discussion.
