A college education is not only essential for a good job or a career but also for facing life on your own. Till your 12th, you have had your family running the show. Your parents earn the money, run the house and take care of you. It is only after you step out into this big world after graduation that you finally get to experience life on your own. While college gives you a sound education to find that perfect job and earn your living, it also equips you with skills that will help you make it on your own. Here are the 5 biggest skills that you learn during your college years.

  1. Responsibility: With college, gone are the days when your mom or dad or maybe an older sibling would come to your aid or help you out of a sticky situation. Your college years help you take responsibility for all your actions. They also teach you to become your own advocate and stand up for yourself.
  2. Time management: Classes, assignments, tests, friends, hangouts, trips, fests and social clubs leaving you out of breath? Well, learn to manage your time well, because soon there will be 10 times that pressure on you without any safety net. College years are the right time to perfect your time management skills. These skills will not just distinguish you from the rest of the herd but also help you succeed.
  3. Perseverance: Tough assignment that you can?t crack? Or a strict professor you just can't get through? Well, here's where you learn the skill of staying on your course all the way through till the very end. Your perseverance skills will get you places, so you better stick to your guns.
  4. Relationships: College is where you make friends for life (and if you are lucky, you will find the love of your life as well). This is where you learn how to build and maintain relations. This skill comes in handy when you start networking in the professional sphere.
  5. Communication: College years are the best time to work on your communication skills because you will meet a range of people from all walks of life and at various stages of authority. From your pesky roommate and interfering warden to your unreasonable professors, you will learn to deal with conflict and the best way to resolve it.

You will have four (three or five in some) whole years to learn and perfect these life skills which will serve you for your entire life.
